Event Description: The WVPCA and Dr. Danell Boatman invite you to join us for this informative session on messaging and actions regarding colorectal cancer screenings. Dr. Boatman will share research about evidence-based strategies for messaging to patients about colorectal cancer screening and practical ways to incorporate into patient and health system messaging.
This event is offered in partnership with the WV Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening (PICCS), and we will be joined by Susan Eason, MA, Program Director, and Megan Mezzanote, Program Coordinator, Cancer Prevention and Control from the WVU Cancer Institute. Community Health Centers will also share best practices for patient outreach and communication to improve colorectal screening.
Objectives and Goals:
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe key behavioral factors influencing colorectal cancer screening decisions among screening-eligible West Virginians, including adults ages 45 to 49 years.
2. Explain how message framing (gain-framed vs. loss-framed) and perceived urgency influence screening intention and behavior.
3. Identify communication strategies that pair urgency with self-efficacy to support colorectal cancer screening action in real-world settings.
4. Recognize practical ways these strategies can be incorporated into patient and health system communication.
