Please join the WVPCA for Introducing Rethink Your Drink: A New Approach to Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, presented by Gina Sharps.  The Rethink Your Drink Campaign is an evidence-based education campaign designed to inform users about the relationship between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and increases in rates of overweight and obesity.  The program provides nutrition education and recommendations for improving overall health, but specifically emphasizes reducting intake of soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks.  The program is to educate children and adults about healthy drink options, specifically promoting the consumption of water.

The Oral Health Coalition purchased Rethink Your Drink Kits with funding from Mountains of Hope for the School-Based Health Centers that applied for Rethink Your Drink grants in the last year through the WVPCA.  One kit is being provided to each Health Center that applied for a Rethink Your Drink grant.

Gina will share best practices in making use of these kits in School Based Health Centers and describe how to present the information using the kits as the central focus.

Gina Sharps, B.S.D.H., M.P.H., is an oral health educator at Marshall University School of Medicine and also the coordinator for the West Virginia Oral Health Coalition. In addition, she serves as West Virginia’s Dental Hygienist Liaison, a partnership between the National Center on Early Childhood Health and Wellness in collaboration with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD).

Gina brings 25 years of clinical and public health experience to the field. She is a past president of the West Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association, and a member of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. She has served on the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Medical Dental Advisory Committee and currently serves as a consultant with the ASTDD along with serving on the ASTDD Fluorides Committee.
Following this webinar, participants will:

  • Be able to construct the Rethink Your Drink kit
  • Learn how to present specific information regarding the education of sugary drinks and the need for increasing water to provide the body what it needs to function properly.

Registration closes on December 15 at NOON.
