Understanding how our adolescent patients view their world is critical in having successful outcomes and connecting with these patients can sometimes pose a challenge.  Join the West Virginia Primary Care Association (WVPCA) to learn how to maximize the collection of information in the initial assessment through the use of storytelling by the patient and constructing a genogram to capture the information.

John Kennedy, School-Based/Behavioral Health Coordinator for the WVPCA will share his clinical experience in the use of constructing genograms with adolescents as a method of gathering important information not only for assessment purposes, but treatment also.  By creating a portrait of the adolescent's life, it enables the therapist to later explore the many faucets of their life while making connections between the events.

John completed his graduate work from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and continued his training in family therapy through the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Following this webinar, participants will:

  • Identify the value of utilizing genograms in counseling adolescents
  • Learn to design a genogram utilzing the appropriate symbols to describe that adolescent's story
  • Discuss how a genogram may provide insight into an adolescent's adverse childhood experiences and its' use in treatment
