The WVPCA invites you to participate in a one-hour webinar discussing Suicide Prevention for Veterans. Suicide is a preventable national health problem. Suicide prevention is of special concern to the military community as active-duty service members and veterans account for approximately 20-22 percent of all deaths from suicide in the United States.

Veterans face many stressors that can increase their risk for suicide such as combat and peacetime, along with challenges like traumatic experiences and frequent moves. Left unaddressed, these stressors can become overwhelming and may make veterans more vulnerable to substance use disorders and mood disorders because of high levels of stress which both disorders are associated with military suicide. Other stressors that increase suicide risk include relationship problems, legal or discipline issues and work problems.

Dr. Bossarte, Director of Injury Control Research Center, at West Virginia University will present the webinar.

Following this webinar, participants will:

  • Describe the epidemiology of suicide in the Veteran population
  • Identify risk factors associated with suicidal ideation
  • Understand evidence of risk for suicide associated with military experience
  • Understand strategies to improve care coordination within the Veterans’ system of care
