"The Red Carpet"
Showcasing 25 Years of Community Health in West Virginia

In celebration of the Association's 25th anniversary, the theme picked by the WVPCA's conference committee was "The Red Carpet - Showcasing 25 Years of Community Health In West Virginia."  To follow along with the red carpet theme the committee also developed three new awards for the 2008 event.  In addition to the annual Laura Small Award for Excellence in Health Care, the WVPCA also sought nominations for the "Golden Globe", the "Oscar", and the "People's Choice" Awards.

Annually, the Laura Small Award (given in memory of Laura Small, who as Executive Director of the Women's Health Center of WV, exemplified excellence through her intense dedication to the advocacy of access to primary care for women) recognizes an individual or organization for leadership in serving women's health needs.  This year's winner(s) are Dixie Showalter, RN and Patricia Mays, RN, WHNP of the Ritchie County Primary Care Association in Harrisville, WV.

One of this year's new awards, the Golden Globe, was designed to acknowledge an all-around outstanding individual who had consistently worked behind the scenes to support the mission of the community health center movement.  The 2008 WVPCA Golden Globe was awarded to Jeanne Marzell, C-CN, APN, MAC of Shenandoah Valley Medical Systems, Inc., located in Martinsburg, WV.

Another award, the Oscar, was developed to celebrate team leadership in that it was designed to acknowledge the outstanding community health center leadership team that had demonstrated the ability to capitalize on the collective strengths of each team member to advance access to health care or support efforts to promote a healthy community.  The WVPCA Oscar was presented to the WomenCare (dba FamilyCare) management team.  Representing both the Charleston and the Teays Valley FamilyCare sites were Diane Pendleton, MD and Martha Carter, RN, CNM and CEO of FamilyCare.

The WVPCA's final award, the People's Choice, was just that.  The award was designed to acknowledge an outstanding innovation or idea that has worked well in a particular setting and that has shown significant potential to improve health care quality or delivery, reduce costs, or improve health outcomes for a particular at-risk population.  Our membership (that wished to be considered for the award) was asked to provide posters for display during the annual conference that would then be voted on by the conference attendees during a networking reception held Wednesday night, August 6th, during the conference.  The votes were then tallied and during Thursday evening's banquet the award was presented to the Belington Community Medical Services Association of Belington, WV for their Breast Cancer Awareness program's successful event, "It's All About E.W.E. (Educating Women Effectively)."

The West Virginia Primary Care Association also received an award of its own during the conference.  In honor of our 25th year, the National Association of Community Health Centers presented WVPCA Board President, Barbara Lay (Minnie Hamilton Health Care System's CEO) with a 25th Anniversary plaque, "celebrating twenty-five years of service to those who provide quality, comprehensive primary and preventative health care to America's most vulnerable populations."
